What happens when you join us?
You'll either join as a Student Member or an Affiliate Member. This means that everyone has immediate access to all the benefits of membership. Moving to another category of membership depends on your experience, qualifications and, of course, your goals. If you want to work as a health and safety professional, we'll review your qualifications and experience to find out which membership category is right for you.
The six membership categories are:
- Student Member
- Affiliate Member
- Associate Member
- Technical Member
- Graduate Member
- Chartered Member
- Chartered Fellow

What qualifications do I need to progress through the membership categories?
With over 35 accredited qualifications on offer, members can choose from a broad range of courses at various institutions to help them progress through our membership categories. Have a look at our list of qualifications and institutions that meet the academic requirements for Technical (Tech IOSH) and Graduate (Grad IOSH) membership, and where these are available.
On graduation, Student Members will be offered to upgrade to full IOSH membership. They will need to have provided IOSH with their qualification certificate and we will then advise them of the right category of membership
Apply for a different category of membership
If you would like us to check whether your qualifications and experience meet the requirements for Associate, Technical or Graduate membership, please send an up to date CV along with your certificates for any relevant qualifications so we can check that they meet our criteria. Please do not send us original documents – good quality copies are acceptable.
Once we receive your application, we'll then review your qualifications and experience to decide if you're eligible for Associate, Technical or Graduate membership. We will let you know the outcome within six working weeks of receipt. You will remain in your current category of membership until we confirm that your application to change category has been successful.
